![]() The anthology-style chapters also annoyed me at first, since the vignettes created a choppy flow. Since Ruskovich enjoys writing poetic passages, I grew to appreciate her careful word choice since she imbues every detail and action with significance, making the characters’ ultimate fate more tragic or rewarding. ![]() I’m usually impatient when it comes to flowery prose and long, complex sentences with double meanings. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn’t have picked up a book like “Idaho,” but I grabbed it on impulse one late night at the library. Years later, second wife, Anne, of the girls’ father tries to decipher the events of that fateful day. At first, I found the premise of the book incredibly pretentious: a mother, Jenny, suddenly kills one of her daughters for no apparent reason while the other girl runs away. It turned out the be one of the most substantive novels I’ve ever read. ![]() ![]() Over winter break, I read “Idaho” by Emily Ruskovich, a book with a deceptively simple title. ![]() ![]() Nunez’s novel was chosen from among five fiction works set mostly in the present, and touching with lyricism and intensity upon everything from race and sexuality to climate change. “And tonight how happy I am to feel a part of the world.” “How lucky to have discovered that writing books made the miraculous possible, to be removed from the world and be part of the world at the same time. “I thought it was something I could do alone and hidden, in the privacy of my own room,” she said. By 2012, polls showed support for independence at 10-15%, while support for increased devolution within France was as high as 51% (of which two-thirds would prefer "slightly more" rather than "much more" autonomy). He's quite scary in a delicious sort of way. Temple is big and imposing and has tattoos. If any member of the club loses their entire fortune, they can win it all back by beating Temple in the ring so far no one has accomplished this. Temple, known as the Killer Duke, is a bare-knuckles boxing champion. All three books center around a gaming hell called the Fallen Angel. No Good Duke Goes Unpunished was my favorite of the three books due primarily to the awesomeness of the hero and heroine. ![]() It was everything I love in a historical romance without the overused tropes flooding the market. I was intrigued by the idea of a story set in a gaming hell (casino) since I've reached my Regency/ballroom saturation point. I started this series after listening to Sarah's interview with MacLean on the podcast. Instead I spent almost the entire weekend on the couch reading the Rules of Scoundrels series by Sarah MacLean. I had lots of things to do this weekend: I had Christmas cookies to bake, presents to wrap, pictures of Matt Bomer to Google. ![]() |
